Asking Strange Questions Helps Everyone
- Do users really need this feature?
- Why use this framework or process?
- What does this code actually do?
- Can we automate this step?
- What would happen if we deleted it?
When the answer is “it’s always been this way” or “I don’t know,” it indicates an opportunity for improvement.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem silly, because the real danger lies in a culture that never questions the status quo. To continuously improve, we should boldly ask seemingly foolish questions. If the answers are obvious, they can be solved easily; if the questions need discussion and hit the key points, any question can be a good question.
Not asking questions may stem from cultural and psychological pressure. A team culture that encourages admitting mistakes, asking questions, and learning helps everyone understand that “it’s okay not to know; continuous learning is what matters.” There are no practices that are “taken for granted”; everything is worth questioning and exploring.
