Is No UI the Best UX? What Will UI Look Like in the New Era?
There is a scenario where older family members ask questions like, “How do I enlarge the text?” or “How do I use this software?” Experienced digital users may find these questions ridiculous, thinking, “Can’t you just Google it?”
Similarly, I feel the same way when using closed 2B or internal systems; there is too much prerequisite knowledge that raises the usage threshold.
- From a product perspective, the complexity of solving problems makes it hard to simplify processes.
- From a user perspective, no matter how powerful a feature is, it feels like a product manual—no one cares.
An outstanding interface, complete functionalities, and a smooth experience are just means to an end. It doesn’t constitute a beautiful experience; users still need to forcibly learn how to operate the interface and understand the practical details of the product to transform “problems” into “actions”.
In the new era, we can expect AI in products to understand problems and select the right tools to execute.
The conclusion is that the UI interfaces of the old era will become like as keyboards and phones, and browsing a webpage will feel like visiting a bookstore. The next trend will be figuring out how to effectively integrate services with AI.
